Metchosin BioBlitz: Authorities for Species Names

All of the species names submitted by our taxonomic experts have been verified against standard lists of species names. Here are the authorities used at the BioBlitzes for the various species groups:

Birds: "Check-list of North American Birds” produced by the North American Classification Committee (NACC).

Marine organisms: E-Fauna BC, Electronic Atlas of the Wildlife of British Columbia. As the World Register of Marine Species has matured, it has also become a valuable source for the names of the quarter million marine species. Additional marine organism references are drawn from Seashore Life of the Northern Pacific Coast by Eugene N. Kozloff.

Snails: E-Fauna BC, Electronic Atlas of the Wildlife of British Columbia. Additional snails from Forsyth, R.G. 2004, Land Snails of British Columbia, Royal British Columbia Museum: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Slugs: E-Fauna BC, Electronic Atlas of the Wildlife of British Columbia.

Mushrooms and Lichens: Index Fungorum, supplemented by Species Fungorum. For mushrooms, additional data pers. comm. A. and O. Ceska. Lichens supplemented with Trevor Goward lists on the Ways of Enlichenment web site. For Lichens we will be transitioning to Theodore Esslinger's A Cumulative Checklist for the Lichen-forming, Lichenicolous and Allied Fungi of the Continental United States and Canada in place of the Index Fungorum. Red- and blue-listing information on lichens (there are no local endangered lists for fungi) are from the E-Flora database.

Vascular Plants and Mosses: Online database maintained by the Conservation Data Centre (CDC) of the BC Ministry of Environment. Additional data on mosses pers comm T. McIntosh and S. Joya.

Liverworts: Species list in the appendix of W. B. Schofield, Field Guide to Liverwort Genera of Pacific Northwest America.

Insects and Mammals: E-Fauna BC, Electronic Atlas of the Wildlife of British Columbia.

Spiders: “Checklist of the spiders of British Columbia,” Prepared by Robb Bennett, David Blades, Claudia Copley, Darren Coplye, Don Buckle, Charles Dondale, and Rick C. West (2014). This checklist, an older version of which is available on the E-Fauna pages, follows in turn Norm Platnick's World Spider Catalog. Additional data pers comm R Bennett and D Copley.

Algae: Algaebase. Pers. comm. Phil Lambert. Pers. comm. Sandra Lindstrom.
