From about 500 CE to 1000 CE the First Nations people living on the southern end of Vancouver Island buried some of their dead (or the dried bones of some of their dead) in plots of ground surrounded by large rocks. These rock cairns, currently studied by anthropologist Darcy Matthews, are scattered throughout Metchosin. A large number of them are on the Metchosin DND properties.
